David Hobourn has enjoyed a very varied musical career, as a choral director, teacher of IB and A level Music, an Organist, Music Examiner, and adjudicator. David studied at Trinity College of Music London, and held posts at Canterbury Cathedral, (Organ Scholar), Bristol Cathedral (Assistant Organist), St. Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin, New Zealand (Temporary Director of Music), Ombrosa Lycée multilingue de Lyon, France (Director of Music), and Shrewsbury International School, Bangkok, Thailand (Director of Choral Music). David holds the Fellowship Diplomas of Trinity College of Music, London, and the Royal College of Organists. As a solo organist David has performed in many prestigious venues in the UK such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey (London), and in France, such as Notre Dame and La Madeleine (Paris), as well as in Germany, Holland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. As Assistant Organist of Bristol Cathedral, David played the organ or directed the Cathedral Choirs for several live broadcasts for the BBC. In 2000, he played the organ for the Royal Maundy Service, which was held in Bristol Cathedral, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. David has been actively involved as a choral director for 25 years. He has directed choirs in many of the UK’s cathedral and Abbey churches and was the Director of Bristol Cathedral Chamber Choir. In France, between 2001 and 2012, he was the director of the Catholic University Choir in Lyon, and he formed his own professional choir ‘Selva Vocale’ whose aim is to promote the English Cathedral Tradition in the Lyon area He has been on the Music Panel (Classical Grades and Diplomas, and Rock & Pop Grades) for Trinity College London since 1999 and has since travelled to many countries around the world. He is also a moderator of diplomas. As a choral and piano adjudicator he has worked in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, New Zealand, and China, and has worked at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in 2012 and 2015 Between 2012 and 2014, David oversaw the running of the seven school choirs at Shrewsbury International School in Bangkok. During this time, he was actively involved in the promotion of and the leading of teacher meetings for the Trinity’s Rock & Pop examinations in many countries in Southeast Asia. In September 2020, David moved to China to take up the post as Director of Music at Lady Eleanor Holles International School, Foshan. This new school is rapidly gaining a reputation as a centre of musical excellence. David oversees the flourishing and dynamic music programme and directs three of LEHFs four choral groups.
